This Is How We Roll...
This week has been SUPER FUN! The weather is lending to a lot of outdoor opportunities. Take a look at our week in photos.
We are knee deep in place value work in math! Lots and lots of work with tens and ones, and double digit addition! This is a partner game for tens and ones and practicing expanded form.
We took our spelling practice outside on Tuesday!
We did Scooter Math to practice double digit addition with and without regrouping (making a new ten). It was SO MUCH FUN! We did this yesterday morning, and it was already nice and hot at 9am.
Students had to scoot along the sidewalk to find the equations, then write and solve the equations, and scoot along to find more!
This week we also had fun playing "Mystery Numbers" with other first graders! This is a really fun way for students to practice speaking, listening, and working with numbers on the 120 chart (mainly place value).
We met a group of students from Green Bay, WI and we met a class from Mexico! It was fun to hear and see how different first graders are in Mexico compared to our classroom....and how we are the same in some ways! They call their teacher "Teacher Hannah" instead of using her title and last name. They also are pretty fluent in English, but we heard them use both English and Spanish when speaking. Now, our students are asking to learn some Spanish....so we might have to weave some in our conversations these next couple weeks of school! How fun!
We also went on a LIVE African Safari!!! It was SO awesome! This Safari is through National Geographic and Wild Earth TV. We were grouped with another class of first graders and taken on a tour through national reserves in South Africa.
Watch out for that leopard!
The tour guides were so great! We were able to Skype some questions to their control center/TV directors, who pass them along to the tour guides, and then our students' names and questions pop up on the screen as the ranger addresses each student and their question! The interactive part of this Virtual Field Trip is wildly awesome!
A fish eagle scooped up a stork---feathers everywhere! You never know what you are going to see in the wild!
Water bucks!
Skull of a water buck.....
Hard to see in this photo, but this is an elephant!! We connected around 11:15am this morning, but it was night time in Africa, so we were on the sunset tour. The rangers use infrared lights to see the animals.
Our tour guide got a little chilly as the night got cooler....she put on a vest and a scarf.
Here's a pod of hippos! Again, the pictures aren't great....but in class, it sure felt like we were right there!!
Mystery Number with friends in Mexico!
More fun with friends in Mexico!
Safari Live!
More Safari!
We will continue our animal fun by finishing up our animal research projects! Students are working on finishing their research books and making their murals of the habitat for their animal. How are the costumes coming along at home? If you need anything, please let me know!
We are looking forward to the Color Run tomorrow!!! Thank you to everyone that has sent in a donation! We will still accept more tomorrow!
Don't forget to check the calendars. There's a lot going on district wide all the way up to the last day! Check Vikingnet.org or our classroom calendar here on this website! Have a great night!
