Snacks

We will have snack every day mid-morning. On late start days, we will typically have an afternoon snack break. SNACKS MUST BE PEANUT/TREE NUT FREE!

A snack calendar can be found on our website, and in your child's folder.

Please only send snacks that are typical snack foods, NOT junk food/sweets. Children are given a snack break to refuel and be ready for more learning. Sugar and sweets are not good for our attention spans and focus. Nutritious options are more than welcome! Please note that fruit and veggies are welcome but they must be in the manufacturer package to ensure that they are not cross contaminated with peanut/tree nut products.  Please send plates or utensils if you think your snack requires it.

Snack ideas: Baby carrots. Apples, plain raisins, Sargento or Meijer brand cheese sticks, applesauce cups, peach cups, pear cups, mandarin oranges cups, GoGurt, Nutri-grain bars (apple, cherry, raspberry, blueberry), Cheerios (regular, Fruity, Apple Cinnamon, frosted only), Austin Zoo Animal Crackers, Cheeze-Its, Keebler Club Crackers, Goldfish
Crackers (original, colors, cheddar, pretzel, giant, flavor blasted)

Occassionally, if you are able to send in an extra  non-perishable snack, it is appreciated! Sometimes students forget, and it is helpful to have extras on hand.

We WILL NOT SERVE sweets or treats unless it is your child's birthday or a holiday party. Fruit snacks and Rice Krispy treats are not considered nutritious snacks for typical snack days.

*Students are welcome to bring a water bottle that does not spill if tipped over. Please only fill with water! Water bottles can be brought back and forth daily, or your child will be asked to take them home on Fridays to be washed.

Brithday Treats

Please check the monthly snack calendar for your child's birthday treat day! You are welcome to send in a birthday treat with your child, but please do not feel obligated. We
know that a lot of work goes into planning a special party at home for family and friends. While we LOVE celebrating milestones with your child, we don’t rely on sweet treats to have a good time!
We will still celebrate your child!

If you do feel the need to send a treat, it MUST be peanut and tree nut free. Students may bring one small item that that is individually wrapped to be shared at
the last recess or end of the day. Remember----kids LOVE things other than sweet treats, like stickers (individually separated for easy hand out) or party favors from the Dollar Store.

Here are some peanut/tree nut free treat options, if you feel inclined:
Tootsie rolls, Tootsie Pops, Charms Blow Pop, Double Bubble Gum, Jolly Rancher hard candies, or Jolly Rancher
Gummies, DumDum Lollipops, Smarties, Skittles, Nerds, Pop Rocks, Starburst, or Skittles.

Summer birthdays will be celebrated in May and June, and will be on the snack calendar then!

Daily Communication

A home/school folder will be sent home every day. This folder will contain important work that your child has completed or needs to complete, school updates/flyers, a monthly calendar, and a note pocket for safely bringing notes/money to and from school. This is where Mrs. Powell will check for transportation notes, lunch money, book orders, Santa shop money, communication notes - questions/comments, etc.

Please empty your child's folder every night and have a conversation with them about their work at school. These can be great conversation starters for the dinner table! It is important to the learning process that your child receive feedback from you about their work, and know that you are involved and value their time at school.

Please have your child return the folder each day. Part of their morning routine is to place the folder where it belongs in the classroom. This is good for developing routines and responsibility!

Contact Mrs. Powell

The best way to contact Mrs. Powell during the day is via E-Mail. The classroom phone is set to go directly to voicemail to minimize classroom interruptions while working with students. If you would like to leave a voicemail, calls are typically returned at the end of the school day or the next morning. E-mail is checked throughout the day and will get you the fastest response.

If you have an emergency, please contact the office and they will immediately notify me. The number is 231.876.5100

Birthday & Party Invites

If you would like to send home invites during the school day, please be mindful of our young students' friendships and feelings. If your child has an invite for the whole class, they may place the invites in student mailboxes during a convenient time in our day.

If your child is only inviting a select few students, please put them in the money/notes pocket of your child's folder and Mrs. Powell will get them in the student folders at the end of the day. This is done discreetly when the children are at recess and they typically don't even see the invite until they get home and check their folder with parents.

This helps prevent any hurt feelings, and promotes positive frienships and interactions! Thank you for being considerate of others when planning a party or event for your child!

Toys & Things

Children are asked to keep toys and personal belongings home unless it relates to a classroom project/activitiy. Keeping toys at home minimizes distraction and prevents beloved items from being lost, stolen, or damaged.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Parent volunteers are welcome in the classroom and within the school in a variety of ways. We love additional helping hands!

As volunteer opportunities arise, they will will be posted on the blog or an e-mail will be sent out. We'll match up our schedules and confirm everything before you begin.

Please be sure your young student is able to handle having you in the classroom or school: can they still stay focused on their school work and listen to the teacher? Can they still follow school rules with you around? Can they 'share' you with other students? If the answer to all of those is yes, then your time at school will be most enjoyable and rewarding!
