First Grade ROCKS!

What do brownie bites, cool whip, and chocolate pudding have in common with sedimentary rocks?

LAYERS! We have been talking about layers of the earth, layers in rocks, and trying to learn exactly what layers are. We've talked about how we layer our clothes sometimes ---especially in the winter. We also learned that sometimes bakers layer cakes and desserts! It sounded like a pretty delicious opportunity to try it ourselves!

Ask your child if they remember the three types of rocks and if they can explain what sediments are!

Max Stange is a sophmore at Cadillac High School, and he is a self-taught rock expert! Since he was 4-5 years old, Max had a growing interest in rocks that still keeps him busy today. Max likes to find and collect lots of interesting rocks, and even polishes some to make and sell jewelry! He is thinking about the possibility of studying geology in college!

Max shared his knowledge and parts of his collection with our first grade geologists, and they loved it! He had some really cool ones to look at under black light as well. Max totally ROCKED our first grade world!

These girls thought it was really fun and funny to hold petrified dino poop! Not many kids can say they held dino poop!

We also had a super fun TIME playing a couple rounds of math knockout with Mrs. Quist's class! We love math knockout for practicing a variety of skills. This week, the focus was time to the hour and time to the half hour.

Here's what's going on in other areas of our learning:

Reading: Fairy Tales! We have read Sleeping Beauty and Rumplestiltskin. If the weather is yucky this weekend, maybe you can cozy up and watch Sleeping Beauty! Ask your child to compare it to the version we read in class.

Science: Light and Sound

Social Studies: Maps

Spelling: The words are getting more difficult for the remainder of the year! Please be sure to check with your child at home to see how they are doing with our spelling words - especially since each list contains multiple spelling patterns that often sound alike! For example, this week's words contain G that sounds like /j/ AND G that makes the regular /g/ sound.. The test is Monday!

Math: We are finishing up this unit with several lessons and activities about 2D and 3D shapes as well as measuring with non-standard units. This is a really fun hands-on math unit that the kids really enjoy!

Thank you to everyone who came to the spring concert! The kids were so cute, and did a really great job on stage. I know I especially enjoyed all the extra choreography from the Kindergarten students! :) Check out today's newspaper for a snapshot of our very own first graders on stage, Emma and Kyla!

Have a great weekend, everyone!!
