Jazzed Up In January!
We´re all jazzed up about the learning that is happening in our classroom! In math, students have been doing a great job learning about place value, and working with the tens and ones places. We have been working hard to add tens and also ´make a ten´ to be able to add quickly. Check out these videos below and more on your child´s SeeSaw account.
The drawing below is from Ayden´s SeeSaw account. He used the whiteboard feature to show that 8+9 = 17 using the ´make a ten´ strategy. He circled 9 (the largest partner/addend) and took one from the 8 and gave it to the 9 to ´make ten´. Once he made a ten, he could quickly add 10 and the remaining 7 ones to get 17. These visual representations really help some students see the ten group!
In spelling and phonics, we have been working to learn the au/aw sound - being able to both read and write words with those spellings. We´ve also been learning about nouns/verbs.
This drawing is from Abrielle´s SeeSaw journal. Way to go, Abrielle!
Also new this week, we used Google Earth to check out the Great Pyramids of Giza and see the Sphinx. Everyone thought it was really neat to see the pyramids that we have been reading about and watch Google Earth zoom from our location all the way around the world!
Science has been a big hit this week learning about outer space, with a focus on learning the 8 planets. We have learned songs and fun facts and are working on reading a non-fiction article about the Solar System. Here´s this catchy tune, if you dare! Have you heard your child singing it at home?!
We will continue with more Solar System learning next week!
Enjoy your weekend!!
