What's the Buzz?
We are buzzing with all sorts of excitement this week! Not only have we been studying bees all week, but our Animal research projects are in full swing. Now that we are great readers, it is so fun to watch students be able to independently read and write information from a variety of websites, articles, and books. They keep asking for more! We are nearing the part where we transfer our research notes into a final copy and then we practice, practice, practice telling our facts!
Please be sure to have a plan for your child's costume on June 2. If you are unable to provide a costume, please let me know ASAP so I can help your child at school. We do not want anyone left out on this special and FUN day! If you are doing face paint, please plan on coming in at 12:30 to help your child get ready. You will need a volunteer clearance form on file prior to your visit.
As we approach the end of the year, there is a lot coming up:
-Walk/Jog-a-thon: Students who raise $20 or more in donations will be able to run through the color burst area (like at the color run!) at the end of the run! They are super excited, but they will need their donations. Otherwise, students will participate, but not go through the color burst. Make donations right online, if you'd like. Visit our Facebook Page! The donations go toward the Forest View Scholarship fund to be granted to Forest View alumni that are graduating this year!
-No School: May 29, Memorial Day
-Talking Zoo/A Day at the Museum: Join us and see all the learning in some really cool formats....habitats, posters, 'talking zoo', biographies, and more! 1:30-3:15pm....open house style. Come and go as you are able!
-Field Day: June 9th. Students should come dressed to play outside and wear gym shoes!
-June 12: Center Lake....look for information to come home soon! Sign up is first come first serve for activity choices! More information to follow as the date approaches.
-Summer Birthdays: Summer birthday treats will be on the June snack calendar. We will do our typical healthy, non-sweet treat snack in the mornings as usual, and birthday treats will be enjoyed at the end of the day. Please be sure to check the June snack calendar that will come home soon! We are out of extra snacks and many students have been forgetting to bring snack on their day. If you forget, it is helpful to send in extras the next day so that we can re-stock our cupboard. Thanks so much! Not much longer to go on snacks!!! Next year, 2nd graders typically bring their own snack, and you'll soon be off the hook! :)
Special Notes:We have our outdoor classroom and try to go outside A LOT! We work outside often, Mrs. Powell reads our stories outside if it is nice, and we take extra play/brain breaks outside. The mosquitos are bad right now, though! Please feel free to sunscreen and bug spray your child BEFORE coming to school. They should not bring these items to school. Your child is welcome to bring a beach/bath towel to sit on when we go outside. They will keep it in their backpack each day, and you can wash it as needed.
We have had a lot of fun this week learning about and exploring 3D shapes. We are learning what the shapes are called, and vocabulary related to these geometric shapes: edges, vertex, vertices, faces. Students had fun using the shapes to build new structures. You can connect this learning at home by having your child find real world 3D objects (basketballs are spheres, kleenex boxes are cubes or rectangular prisms, ice cream cones are....obviously...cones!, etc.)
Stay tuned....more great stuff coming up on Friday and next week, too!
A rare sighting of boys sitting still! :)
