Homecoming Week!

Hey First Grade Families!

We have loved spirit week this week! Thank you to everyone who showed some VIKING PRIDE by dressing up throughout the week, especially on Blue and Gold day! I hope to see everyone at the parade tonight at 5PM. Remember, Forest View has a spot by the skate park down by the lake. We will gather there as a school family and watch the parade! The game starts later in the evening, and let's hope the weather report is mistaken! GO VIKINGS!!!!!!

We loved hat day!

This week we have focused on the story, Matthew and Tilly. We learned that the theme was 'friendship'. We brainstormed and made an anchor chart (see below) for all the things we know about friendship...and we had some great ideas!! I love how insightful the friends in our classroom are. We also worked on asking question about unknown words in a text. Our vocabulary words were: squiggly, crabbiest, customer, picky, and rescued.

We have also been working on using text based evidence to answer a question about this story. Look for the PROVE IT! reader response sheet in your child's folder. It was worth 10 points toward their reading comprehension grade.

We've worked really hard in math this week to learn multiple strategies to add within 7. This class does really well with math mountains, using fingers, using circle drawings, etc. Some kids are really great at mental math for these facts so far, as well! We will continue next week and work our way up to adding and subtracting within 10.

One goal for first grade is to have your child count to 120, starting at any number. If you are able to work on that at home, in the car, or even during commercials, it would be very helpful!

Here is a fun movement video to help your child count to 120!

The kids have really enjoyed earning points on Class Dojo! Ask your child about this positive reward system. Students can earn points for many things: working hard like a first grader, coming to the group/teaching area on time, being kind, cleaning up, having a clean table area, staying on task, being helpful, and much more! They can even earn DOUBLE points by staying on task during Daily 5 literacy stations. Today, several students had enough points to cash in for bubble gum, or a sticker! That is worth 35 points. The next level is 50 points, for some extra recess time! There are a few more levels after that, too!

Also....I totally forgot to take a picture of Emma and her beach ball! Emma has breezed through all of her sight words and earned a big beach ball for reaching the highest level, and knowing all 220 sight words (ball words!). Many students have come home with baseball certificates this week, and are working on their next set of words. When the whole class passes a list, we will have a class party. For example, when we all pass the baseball words, we will do a baseball related activity in the gym or outside! It is so nice to see classmates helping and encouraging others to do their best to learn their words, as we all work toward the common goal of being excellent readers!!

I hope everyone has a GREAT weekend! Enjoy your little ones!
