Movie, Snacks, REWARDS!

What a great day back after a long weekend! Today, our classes rounded out Unit 4 with the movie version of our short story study of "All Summer in a Day", by Ray Bradbury. Inspired by the historical "Space Race" between the USA & Soviet Union, this science fiction story was a a lot of fun to study! We had great discussions about the historical elements of the space competition, posed questions about the reality of life on Venus (the setting in the story), identified figurative language, studied how the setting impacts character moods and the mood of the reader, cited text evidence to prove our thinking, studied imagery, and expanded our vocabulary.

Today, we compared the movie to the story. It was neat to see the differences in both the movie and the story from nearly 60 years ago!

CONGRATS to our 5th hour English Language Arts class for making the most growth toward their annual goal (collectively) on the winter i-Ready assessment! Their hard work is definitely showing, and we are proud of their growth as a class. We celebrated with ice cream and toppings, courtesy of Mr. Brown! Individually, Moirha was our top scorer in 5th hour, so she earned a "little" extra cool whip as a pre-ice cream treat! HAHA! Check out the photos and video. No comments from Moirha, as she was speechless. ;)

Keep up the great work everyone!! Our next reward day is Feb. 26th. for Kids Choice rewards! Requirements are C- or higher, and no missing assignments by end of the day on Feb 25th. Hard work pays off!! Stick with it, you've got this!
