6th Grade Superstars!

Our 6th graders really are superstars, and it is so fun working with them each day! This is a really fun group of students and we are accomplishing a lot together already this school year. Since our last update, our 6th grade scholars have written and published personal narrative stories (among lots of other grammar, reading, and writing work). They were really encouraged and challenged to dig deep and find a story that made others want to read it. We are continually trying to move beyond those elementary writing skills and level up. Our writers did not disappoint!

We had so much fun publishing our work and displaying it for all to see. Students did a fantastic job reading and leaving positive feedback for our authors. We hope you enjoyed seeing many of these writings on display during conferences!

Speaking of conferences, it was really great to meet with the families that stopped in to see me and check on your ELA students. One of the best parts of being an educator is partnering with the entire family for the benefit and success of the child. It was a pleasure to meet with you and get to know you all!

As parents of middle schoolers, one thing that I would like to encourage is to keep the communication coming! I appreciate the emails, calls, and conferences throughout the year. At this level, it is highly encouraged to include your child in the emails about their work, missing assignments, or bring them to conferences with you! It is their education and we want them included in the conversations whenever possible. Of course, there are some things that are just for parents and teachers to discuss, but for the most part, we will always include the student. It is a great way to give them a voice, learn to communicate, and ask questions. You will notice that if I reply to a parent email about student work, the reply will also include the child's school email. It is a switch from elementary, but your child is old enough now to be a part of those classwork conversations and take on that responsibility! We are growing capable leaders and it is exciting to help guide them in this direction.

In other news, some of our students were able to do some cooking with Mrs. Powell in 6th hour. We had fun using our reading and math skills in the Pumpkin Dip recipe to make this tasty treat! It was delicious and easy to make! Are you starting to teach your child some basic cooking skills at home to increase independence in the kitchen? Middle schoolers are capable of making lots of easy recipes and learning how to follow directions on boxed food items!

As we move forward, please continue to check your child's grades and assignments on parent portal. Ask to see their paperwork from all classes! 6th Graders don't always bring their work home, but they should! It takes lots of reminders to bring those items home; keep encouraging them to communicate with you abut specifics at school and in each class!

Lastly, CONGRATS to our VIKING award winners from last week! Have a great weekend, everyone!
