ELA Update Dec. 10

Hello, 6th Grade Families!

We have started our 3rd unit, Argument Writing! Middle schoolers are pretty good at arguing, right?! We will learn how to formally research, investigate credible sources, cite resources, and learn how to back up our opinions with evidence to form a claim with solid evidence. There was quite a buzz about the different topic choices, and the opinions were flying! Kids seem to be pretty passionate about these topics. We are not ready to officially commit to a topic yet, but ask your child their initial thoughts and which one they might choose based off of our discussions today! Check them out!

This one was new for many students! Most students were unaware of medicine and product testing on animals. Check out some products at home and look for "not tested on animals" labels, and extend this conversation at home to build background knowledge!

This topic is pertaining to the ADVANTAGES or DISAVANTAGES of social media use.

This topic is pertaining to animal captivity. Is it acceptable for animals to live in zoos or travel with the circus their entire lives?

Since we are moving into a writing unit once again, we will continue a variety of ELA skill practice each day (since we are not practicing these items within a novel or short story). THURSDAYS are once again study nights! Your 6th grader should be bringing home their weekly skills practice to study with a family member in preparation for their independent check tomorrow! They were reminded in class more than once!

Lastly, please look for an informational page coming home today that explains student chromebooks. Each student will be assigned a school chromebook to carry with them all year (like a textbook). It is imperative that you read the note, sign, and return TOMORROW! First homeroom to get them all back, wins a prize from Mr. Brown!

Thank you tuning in, and let's keep working hard all the way up until Christmas break! Keep checking those grades online! Email me with any questions you may have.

Have a great day!

-Mrs. Powell
