Scholastic is hosting an essay contest about sports & why sports matter/being a good sport. If you are a sports enthusiast, and you enjoy writing, I highly recommend that you enter this essay contest! The grand prize is a $500 American Express gift card and the runners up receive a $250 American Express gift card!! You can spend it anywhere!!

Essays will be scored by the Scholastic judges much like essays are evaluated in class. There is a rubric and more information HERE.

If you are choosing to enter this contest, please send me (Mrs. Powell), an email to let me know! If you need a graphic organizer, I will send one to you so that you can organize your thoughts and plan your essay. Then, you can draft your essay on Google Docs. You have two options:

1. 3-paragraph essay (intro, body, conclusion)

2. 5-paragraph essay (intro with a thesis statement, 3 body paragraphs, conclusion)

Since you are 6th graders (almost 7th graders!), it is recommended that you opt for the 5-paragraph essay to really prove your point about sports and showcase your middle school level writing abilities. A 3-paragraph essay is more suitable for 4th-5th graders, but you still have that choice!

Lastly, we will communicate and have a "digital writing conference" whenever you need it through Google Docs, just as we did with our literary essays. That way, you will get feedback from me, I can connect you with a peer to help revise and give feedback so that we can work together and help you WIN!
