Independent Reading
Hello 6th grade families! We are about two and a half weeks into our independent reading unit in ELA. This is an exciting unit because students get to choose their own novel to study! They have carefully selected just right books based on readability, comprehension, and interest.
So far, we have learned about story structure/plot, scenes, narration, character motivations, and rising/falling tension. We are at the point in our curriculum where we are analyzing characters to see how they have changed throughout the story. This is where I need your help from home!
Many students have not been taking their books home to read each night. They should have been bringing their books home to read 20-30 minutes/night, and bring them back to school each day. Many students are not deep enough into the plot to be successful on analyzing character changes, as some authors don't reveal the biggest changes until the end. To be successful on this analysis, students should be at least 3/4 of the way through their book.
I have adjusted this assignment due date so that they can take more time to read and be most successful. Could you please ensure that they are taking time to read each night for a substantial amount of time? Also, please give them reminders to bring their books back the next day.
This assignment will be due Nov. 18. That gives them plenty of time, including a long weekend, to continue reading and moving forward in the plot of their novel. We will be moving forward with other related lessons in class, so although we will keep reading in class, the independent reading at home on their part is important!
I have attached the documents needed in this blog, and students can also access it in their google classroom. Printed copies are being handed out in class today.
THANK YOU in advance for encouraging your reader to stay committed to the book that they chose as we practice being critical thinkers while exploring literature!
** SIDE NOTE: 1st and 6th hour students who are in a book club with Mrs. Hubbell do not have books to take home. Their novel studies and reading will be done at school with Mrs. Hubbell.
HAPPY READING!
